Jammin' with Mommy

As a warning I should state that my mom and I aren't super duper close and I barely get to see her because she works night shift so I could barely get in contact with her especially in this time frame. However I was able to text her my questions and she could answer it in her own time haha. She also doesn't really say much in general and I rather cut my own foot off than pressure and answer out of her. I picked my mom because she's the last living relative that I have that isn't an immediate sibling.

My mommy's responses will be in Lavender and mine will be in Dark Purple!

What are your musical Interests?

"Musical interests? like what are you referring to?"
Slay mommy. She also never gave me the chance to answer or follow her up with this question haha.

What genre do you listen to?

"I like classic rock and classical music."
These are probably my tastes too, except I like Indie more than classic rock. She also never brought up that she ONLY listens to 70's music. Any time we are in the car she literally hits me if I attempt to change the radio station.

Did you play an instrument?

"I played Flute, Piccolo, and some piano."
Like mother like daughter. I wanted to play saxophone but like my sister she forced me to play flute. I just happened to end up liking it a lot so I stayed with it. Actually, through my own opinion, me and my mom were never close up until I started to play flute because then she started to relive her high school and college days through me. She never talked about it to me once but she went to every competition and concert I've had and looking back I wish I would've appreciated it sooner.

Were you in band?

"Yes I was in the Boiling Springs High School Marching Band and concert band. I was also in the concert band at University of Georgia Atlanta."
I kind of knew my mom did marching band because she forced me into as soon a I was old enough to do it. She even cussed out the district office to let me go to Boiling Springs instead of Chesnee since the band had better opportunities. Man, I'm really ungrateful because my mom did a lit for me. It did really surprise me when I found out she never did it at UGA. She forced me to apply there because she LOVES that school. She literally has a whole room in our house dedicated to UGA, its like a shrine. I picked converse though literally because I like the color purple and the flute professor here is super quirky and cool.

Did you ever sing in public?

"I was in the choir at church as a child and as an adult."
I attempted to sing in a choir and I totally want to do it again. I'm actually thinking about asking the last church I sang in if they would have me back, Im just sad I live so far away from churches that it makes it hard to sing with them. It helps with ear training and thats something I really need to work on. My mom tried to drag me to church as a kid and I remember hating it. Now as an adult I've learned that my mom hates to sing, someone told her when she was younger she was tone deaf and that literally shattered her so she just stopped. The same thing kind of happened to me but I don't want to let that hold me back.

Do you even like music?

"I like music."
Slay Mommy. Not a hater.

Why did you drop flute for color guard?

"Hard to explain about color guard. I loved twirling rifle and being the band front."
I was the only one out of my family that didn't drop flute for color guard. I don't blame her because playing an instrument like the flute can carry a lot of baggage and it is super competitive. I remember when I started competing for region band and all state my mom got highly distressed over it.

Did you go to any concerts (classical or rock)?

"Ive been to drum and bugle corps, Kenny Chesney, Kenny Rogers, Ricky Martin, Kiss. Oh and don't forget about Trans Siberian Orchestra. Oh and Travis Twitter and John Berry. Don't forget Spartanburg Philharmonic, and the Greenville Orchestra (Cant remember the name.) The Canadian Brass. Oh and I forgot the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway."
Im starting to think my mom gaslights me sometimes because my mom has seen all these concerts and literally wont let me go to one. I want to see a drum corps sooo bad. Ive been to a lot of classical concerts but Ive never been to a rock one and the fact she seen KISS made me so upset. I love them so much, they're so cute.

Kiss plays first COVID-era concert in New York. Here's what happened.

Do you have any cool stories?

"no."
I literally wouldn't expect anything less Mommy.

Favorite artist?

"I like Chicago, Three Dog Night, Jethro Tull, Alice Cooper, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little River Band, Rampal and Galway."
I literally only know the flute ones haha. Jethro Tull is pretty cool if you've never heard of him. He's a self taught flautist and he plays and sings but instead of a guitar he literally shreds on the flute. Rampal and Galway make sense because my mom is in her 60's and those were pretty much the main flautists while she grew up. Besides the flute part I think my mom is more of an "Oldies but Goodies" kinda gal.

Favorite band?

She literally didn't even answer this. I know she likes artists more than actual bands though. I know she really likes whatever band did Stairway to Heaven because she makes me play it on flute from time to time.

  1. Hi Jaimee, I am happy to read through this relaxing conversation between you and your mother. I think she has a lot more musical experience than my mother.

I think the way you using two different colours and the middle position of your texts really makes it easy for readers to read. And your purple colour texts explained and gave more information of the words from your mother, I gotta learn from you!

    Thanks!

  2. Your mom is really cool. The fact she can appreciate classical and rock music says a lot. The Jethro Tull video was very interesting. It has a strong message behind it as well...
